Welcome to American Studies. This interdisciplinary course blends English 3 and U.S. History in order to provide a rich exploration of the American experience through both history and literature. Students in both the AP-level and Grade Level sections of American studies will analyze literary and historical texts in order to develop a sophisticated understanding of American history and culture while growing into critical thinkers who effectively use language to communicate ideas.
What makes this course different from the other English 3 and US History courses available at Austin High? Both the AP-level and Grade Level sections will focus on making connections between the two disciplines and to the ACS and AGS pillars of learning. In addition, service learning, civic engagement, and travel experiences will be integrated throughout the year to develop well-rounded, responsible, and virtuous global citizens ready to embrace the challenges students will face as they partake of the human experience that is high school. American Studies is available for the Academy of Classical Studies and the Academy of Global Studies students. The "American Studies" model requires English and History be aligned. AP-level and grade level courses must be taken together which means you may not take an AP-level class combined with a grade level class for English or US History!

SupportThere are many ways to provide support as we blend English and history classrooms into an American Studies model. We have created a Donorschoose.org wishlist to support this change, which includes group dry erase boards, flexible seating choices, an expanded student library, and many other small items to make the experience more enjoyable and educational. Please consider making a one-time or ongoing contribution.
